I hear it all the time from potential clients “what is the purpose of a blog anyway?” The answer is easy and it is complicated. Blogs are a way to share your brand with the world in a way that adds value to your customers. Yet creating compelling content for a blog can become cumbersome to a business owner who already has a full plate. Beyond the basics of blog writing there is a bigger strategy for HOW you write a blog and WHY you do it that way. It is a skill that has taken many professional blog writers years to perfect for clients. Our writers are no different.
Today we wanted to explain some of the basics for blog writing.
Search Engines love content which is the purpose of your blog.
Blogs give you the perfect opportunity to develop compelling content that search engines are looking for. If you are expecting a few keywords on your homepage to drive traffic to your website, I hope you are not waiting too long. Keyword density comes through context and content, not stuffing tons of keywords in your meta-tags. That will actually hurt you more than it helps you.
Your Customers Love Content!
I have seen stats as high as 75% of people want to learn about your brand through content rather than an advertisement. If you are hosting all your content on Facebook then you are missing a valuable piece of organic search. When is the last time your product or service was found in a search engine when you posted it on Facebook?
Never. Never is the answer.
Search engines are looking more for content on the web, not searching sub-pages of content on a social platform. Think about where you search to buy stuff. Are you searching on Facebook or Google? Why would you focus it to somewhere that people are not spending their time searching?
In your blog focus on phrases not on simple keywords.
When is the last time you asked Alexa/Suri/Google/Cortana to find “Chinese?” OR simply said “pizza?” what results would that generate? I will tell you, it will generate the people of China and the definition of pizza. You have to ask “where can I get Chinese food in my area?” OR ” Find me a gluten free pizza.”
The more specific the request, the better the search results. That is why keywords themselves do not work. We need to be focusing on phrases.
Blogs allow you to answer questions, use phrases, and better describe what is amazing about you and your product and or services.
Conclusion:
Everyone including us has urged our clients to start using the blog feature of their website. Having one can be a great asset to your business, but only if you know what you are doing to create content on a blog that the search engines can FIND. This is a skill.
